The name is a reference to ‘chirality’, where an object and its mirror image cannot be superimposed over one another. But we should be aware of these questions that still remain while exploring this analogy. I’m going to save the most nitty gritty of chiralium and just how our understanding of the beach might intersect with out understanding of string theory and parallel universes in order to understand whether chiralium is finite, and we will need a replacement for it eventually (the way our fossil fuels will only last as long as we can find remains of ancient dinosaurs and shit). My point here is that the characters use Chiralium as a resource to further their short term needs for connection regardless of its long term effects on the environment, or the consequences of high concentrations, similar to the emission and pollution problems we face today. Your job is to now retrace her footsteps and connect these terminals to an internet of sorts. Your…sister? Soulmate? has gone before you to build terminals across what remains of the United States. The entire premise of the story revolves around you, Sam, connecting humanity through the Chiral network. Is Amelie a giant corporation selling us the lie that we cannot survive without a resource that is already killing us slowly at first and then all at once?
My main argument is that chiralium is a fossil fuel. I want to talk about an undertone of human exceptionalism and conservation inherent in modern discussions of climate change and environmental justice that remains a constant throughout the society created by the events of the Death Stranding. I’m going to ask you to stretch for this take, too, but I promise it’s a slightly different kind of stretch. An editorial in WaPo from 2019 claimed that it was a metaphor for modern day internet toxicity after Hideo Kojima confirmed that one of his major themes was responding to our digital trending towards media echo chambers. Which, funnily enough, fits his character really, really well.Most discussion of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding centers around its more obvious themes: death, connection, rebirth. In a way, he kind of really did do it for the aesthetic. Today’s the last day anyone sees my face. Not a death mask, though, but one for living- for ruling. That’s why I’ve decided to give myself a mask. I tell you what, if we’ve learned anything from the Beach, it’s that the Egyptians had it all figured out. Like the golden death masks of the pharaohs, the ones decorated using magical adornments as an indication of the wearer’s prestige and power.

Chock full of interesting tidbits about death and how to overcome it. I learned all this and more from an old book I found- the Wisdom of the Egyptians. That’s why people built coffins and sarcophagi- to preserve the body so the soul had a home it could return to. So long as your soul’s got a body to come back to, you can be reborn.
The two become separated, you die- in this world, at least. I don’t have the screenshot on hand, but I do have the transcript. That said, though, he mentions his interest in Egypt in one of his journals that can be picked up via memory chip. DOOMs is measured in levels, and Higgs is the strongest DOOMs sufferer in the game by a long shot, and is said to be “off the charts” in terms of power. He was raised and violently abused/traumatized by his uncle - someone he ended up murdering in self-defense. This is really important, because Higgs already had the groundwork for being disturbed. People with DOOMS often experience extremely distressing nightmares of an impending apocalypse, which can cause or exacerbate mental illness. This is going to sound ridiculous on it’s own, so for some context: the abilities people have in this game (called DOOMs) aren’t like regular superpowers, or even nanomachine enhancements in Kojima’s Metal Gear games - both of which often have few to no real drawbacks. Sure he looks like a drunk girl at the club at 3am on a Thursday most of the time, but before it gets all smeary, it’s almost a wadjet.
